Nordic Fiddlers

Join us for a joyful and somewhat rambunctious tour of a classical take on Nordic fiddling. Bruch interprets Swedish folk songs, Rautavaara and Pehr Nordgren explore Finnish fiddling with a tipple of jaloviina in hand, and Grieg has a twist on Norwegian folk melodies in his iconic Holberg Suite.

The twin themes are ‘fiddle’ and ‘folk’ but rendered on strings as through-composed, contemporary music. This music is also emphatically nordic with its fiddle roots in Norway, Sweden and Finland. 

In the Rautavaara, each of the five movements of this imaginative suite is based on a different fiddle tune from a collection by Samuel Rinda-Nikkola, an early nineteenth-century Finnish mystic and folk musician.
